understanding of the formal, semantic and pragmatic aspects of the English language by
using grammatical and syntactical rules effectively and correctly.

Introduction to Modern British and American Short Fiction
The course aims at enabling students to have contact with the best thoughts, the

greatest minds and works, i.e., literature of people who speak English and as a result learn
and develop their own sense of beauty, intellectual comprehension, high faculty and
imagination. Moreover, the course will expose students to other cultural patterns and
train students to understand and tolerate other critical literary perspectives.

Reading Comprehension
The course will provide students with the opportunity to practice reading of texts

which are similar to those in their sources. It will also provide students with basic
vocabulary useful in coping with academic materials. Moreover, the course aims at
fostering the thinking processes which students need to develop in order to read
standard English effectively. It improves students’ understanding and skills as to the
nature and function of the reading processes.

Basic Techniques in English Teaching Methodology
The course covers a wide range of teaching skills and techniques: basic classroom

skills, practical techniques for developing the four skills (L,S,R,W), use of aids and
materials, and skills of preparation and evaluation.
