The course introduces the standard theory of phonetics, which is the general study of
the characteristics of speech sounds. Our primary focus will be on articulator phonetics:
the study of how speech sounds are produced, or ‘articulated’. The course will also
introduce the standard theory of phonology – the study of the sound systems of English
– at an elementary level, providing and evaluating methods of phonological analysis. The
course will be based on analyzing data mainly from English.
Introduction to Linguistics

The course aims at highlighting and demonstrating basic concepts and recent
theoretical ideas in the major areas of linguistics. It offers an understanding of both the
internal structure of language (its form) and the varied uses of language in human life (its
function). Likewise, it fosters attitudes of confidence in approaching linguistic analysis
and confidence in one’s ability to carry out effective lessons. Consequently, students
become aware of the differences and similarities between first and second language
acquisition.

Oral Proficiency (A)
This course is designed to teach students how to conduct communicative episodes,

how to initiate interaction with speakers of the language, how to respect, avoid and
terminate interaction, and how to internalize goal manners of the language. In addition,
it aims at improving the students’ ability to speak English correctly and idiomatically in a
variety of real-life situations. Students should engage in highly controversial topics which
enrich their communicative skills.

Written Proficiency (A)
